June 2010 Bivouac – Suwannee River

The June 2010 Bivouac was held at Suwannee River State Park, near Lee, Florida. A good time was had by all, and, with the exception of the (slacker) Orlando crew, all squads from the state of Florida were represented (Jacksonville, Tampa, Panama City, Gainesville and St. Augustine). In addition to the campout, a new horseshoe champion was crowned! Congratulations to the Gainesville squad for being the current Horseshoe Champion.

Below are the highs and the lows of the event, and, as usual, some family-friendly photos!

Highlights

  • Park was easy to locate
  • Once again, we didn’t get scolded for drinking!
  • We actually didn’t run out of beer this time
  • We had potable water and, this time, electricity
  • The Suwannee river was walking distance and actually swimmable, which felt great in the heat
  • Sites were level and setup was rather easy and straightforward, once we knew where to set up
  • Food was, once again, great!
  • Horsehoes!
  • There was a nearby “biker bar” (Red Cow) some of us went to in order to watch the USA/Ghana match (World Cup)

Lowlights

  • While the state park officially said 8 campers per site, what they REALLY meant was 2 tents per site (which we didn’t know about). Since we had about 7 tents, we had to get two more spots (across the way, not far)
  • It was again VERY HOT and HUMID
  • Deer ticks and mosquitoes were again a problem
  • Evidently state parks don’t allow you to hang/tie anything to trees, so hammocks are out of the question
  • USA was defeated by Ghana

In all, another great and successful trip. Next month, PAINTBALL in GAINESVILLE. We are still working out the details, but should have more information this week.

↑ Center of camp site. Left to right, “Ex-Wife”, “Old Man”, “Cleveland”, & “Lampshade”.

↑ “Reach” on his first bivouac. The scotch and cigars were bribes to us to let him join. We did.

↑ Forefront, “The Bear Jew” and Scotty playing some horseshoes while the dogs (Finnegan & Sheamus) “guard” the camp.

↑ Action shot of Ron and “Cleveland” throwing some shoes.
